Before the Civil Partnership Act 2004, gay couples were vulnerable to all the legal insecurities of straight couples who live together out of wedlock. This threat lifts with civil partnership. On December 5th 2005 a law came into force to allow gay and lesbian couples the right to form civil partnerships. You'll never hear government use the phrase, but to all intents and purposes Britain now has gay weddings, and about time too!

So what (from a photographers point of view) is the difference between a same sex wedding & a "straight" wedding? In many ways, nothing really. It's all about two people declaring their love and commitment for all the world to see, and this being recorded in photographs. There may be an absence of bridesmaids and / or groomsmen, but this is not uncommon for "straight" civil ceremonies!
